Webinar: Arguments for terminology work (in times of AI) for freelancers (german language)

The advent of machine translation – whether neural or with the help of large language models – is shifting the freelance translator’s remit from translation itself to quality management of machine-translated texts.

Terminology is no longer created by the translators during the translation process and then – if at all – maintained in the termbase, but must be provided to the machine translation systems in advance.

However, having high-quality terminology in foreign languages recorded in a termbase is still something new for many customers. Until now, they have tended to see terminology as a “by-product” that is created with every translation job and is included in the translation memories. With translations created by AI, this no longer works – and so terminology work is becoming a mandatory basis for machine-translated texts.

This makes terminology work a joint task for freelancers and internal and external language services in cooperation with national companies and specialist departments: compiling knowledge of terms and their designations in all required languages and ensuring their distribution.

This is accompanied by a perception and recognition of terminology as an essential contribution to language (data), quality and knowledge management and, in price negotiations, a shift in remuneration to an hourly basis instead of a word basis.

The webinar highlights these new aspects and opportunities for freelance translators.
